Bangkok Jam

A Friday night out dinner with the hubby at Marina Square. Boy~ the placed changed alot. This shows that I had not been there for a very long time. The entire area at the entrance from City Link Mall was changed. There were many new restaurants.

I was surprised to see Bangkok Jam. And that's the place I wish to try out. There is always a long queue at the  outlet in Plaza Singapura. So I was surprised and excited at the no-queue Bangkok Jam at Marina Square. Bangkok Jam is one of the restaurants in the Creative Eateries group.

Stylish modern place. Pretty empty around 9.30pm

It was almost 9 pm when we finally got to meet to eat. Crowded, but seats were still available. Decided on what to eat and ordered. The menu is a 2 sided A3 board.

Bangkok Jam as in the bottled jams. haha cute.

And while waiting (very long wait), we saw some interesting stuff. I'll share later in the post. Feast first.

Fried Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce Marina (recommended) [$9.50] - Chicken wings came first. And we were without utensils. Intended to ask for them when the next dish comes. But it was wayyyy long later. Anyway, the chicken wings tastes quite nice, crispy and tender, even though it turned cold from waiting.

Fish Maw Soup [$9.90] - Soup came next. Still without utensils. The soup is very thick and tasty. There were alot of fish maw, some crab meat and some crab stick. Very tasty nice.

Vietnamese-style Fresh Spring Rolls with Grilled Pork (recommended) [$10.90] - Lastly, the spring roll. I thought it was the fried version. Nevertheless, tasty too. The crunchy vegetables and pork wrapped by a thin skin, add a little of the the sauce and chilli, it was delicious. Size of the pork a little small though.

Oh our white rice finally came too.

And so, the story.

Besides waiting for our utensils to come, the wait for the food was long too. Customers who left long ago, the tables were still cluttered with used plates and bowls and stuff, until we were about to finish our meal then the waiter went to clear, very very slowly. While I was complaining about the utensils, the table next to us was asking about their orders, and was notified that their orders were not processed (later we heard that the orders had already keyed in, but not processed). They left very angrily. Hubby also noticed a chef dressed person taking orders like a waiter.

Later, we chatted with the chef-waiter, and then know that they were very understaffed due to the policy change in manpower. Locals vs FT. Some of the staff were borrowed from the sister restaurant at the opposite side of the mall. Even the chef-waiter is from there too.

Even though the restaurant has been opened for about 2 weeks, but the staffing problem caused alot of trouble for the customers and staff. I do understand the problems in business point of view, but as a customer, this leaves a pretty bad experience.

I just hope that their staffing problem improves. Their food tastes really nice. It would be a waste if this kind of customer experience continues. And caused the reputation. Now I wonder what was the reason behind the long queue in Plaza Singapura.

Atheist

I've learnt a new word.

Atheist (pronounced: a-ti-yes)
Atheist, in a broad sense, is a person who rejects the belief in the existence of deities (wiki)

Here's Derren Brown on converting an atheist (the video where I learnt about this word)

I finally received my first Black Box. So happy and excited! I had subscribed for it quite some time back but has not yet receive any box. That's how I finally got this.

To be honest, the Black Box wasn't what I had anticipated. I was hoping to really receive a physical box, but I guess this round, I'm only getting the Black Mini haha..

Baker Talent

Hubby decided that dinner was not filling enough and wanted to eat bread. And we were surprised by the queue. I guess bread also has peak hours. It was around 6.30pm.

My favourite bread are available. Current favourite: Bo Luo Bun and Ham & Cheese Bun.

While queuing, we saw this notice, urging all Baker Talent's customers to be more vigilant. I guess there are alot of pirates? haha... There are 5 news shops after my first post on Baker Talent. Anyway, I'm just glad to have one of the branches near our home.

Derren Brown - Subliminal Persuasion

Today, I was sharing with my colleague about designers being stuck with a design if we were given a reference or a sample and maybe even having some difficulty thinking out of the box.

And she shared this amazing video.

Now... even the very creative minds are subjected to subliminal persuasion *winks*

Flabbergasted... I like how this word sounds...

揾到食 Wen Dao Shi - 点心 Dim Sum

Hubby brought me to dim sum breakfast at 126 Sims Ave. The interesting thing is... The unit number, 126 and the signage, 揾到食, they rhymes. I asked hubby was it a coincidence or did they purposely find this shop space. And 揾到食 in cantonese "wen dou sek", means "found a place to eat".

We had came here before, a few years back, and I'm not sure why, but this time, it feels happy to eat here, like I had found a huge treasure.

The shop front. The seatings are inside.

皮蛋粥 Century egg porridge [$3.00] - with chicken floss. The porridge is thick and nice. Very filling. So if you want to try more of the dim sum, order one to share.

香港叉烧包 Hong Kong Char Siew Bao [$3.50] - soft textured buns. The traditional way of making dim sum buns. Filled with delicious char siew.

虾饺 Prawn Dumpling [$3.30] - Dumplings filled with big fresh prawns. Love the prawns. But thinking the skin can be better? It's thin but too thin, as the fillings broke out of the skin even before taking it near to my mouth.

虾饺 Prawn Dumpling [$3.30]

烧卖王 Siew Mai King [$4.50] - An upgraded version of siew mai. And it's yummilicious. Smooth textured pork and prawns. The normal ones costs $2.80. I wonder what's the difference though.. More prawns maybe?

鲜竹卷 Bamboo rolls [$4.30] - Bamboo shoots wrapped in toufu skin. Very crunchy, very fresh.

Seems like they have a new outlet at Serangoon Road (Address: 1086 Serangoon Road Singapore 328187)

On the first page of the menu

This place has been in Singapore for many years, (Read ieatishootipost's 2008 blogpost) and I'm glad that the food standard is kept to its best. And I don't have to queue 3 hours =P

八度空间 8 Degrees Taiwanese Bistro

A new restaurant opened near my workplace. Taiwanese food. Interesting. Intended to try out this place during lunch, but it seems bustling during lunch hour, so it sets me off in another direction. Anyway, girlfriend was free for dinner, so I suggested this place.

Taiwanese food and Jay Chou as a theme? I wonder if permission was granted for his photos? Or like my friend said, that this 3rd outlet along with the first two belongs to the singer-actor-director? Can't find anything that mention this in their website. I wonder...

I was sure we were not accompanied by Jay's voice throughout the dinner, even though the website mentioned this:
Together with your family and friends, enjoy well-loved Taiwanese specialities with Jay Chou’s songs playing in the background at 8 Degrees.

There was only another table of patrons other than us when I first sat down. But as the evening progressed, more customers came in.

Jay's looking back at you...

八度珍珠奶茶 8° bubble tea [$3.80] - The tea is not too bad, but the pearls are a little small. Not shiok enough haha.

淑鹽芝士薯條 8° five spice fries with cheese [$4.80] - Nice. Cheesy. But what were the five spices? Didn't really taste that. But the cheese is yum. Remember to save some cheese for the fries at the bottom, as the cheese only covered the surface.

八度滷肉飯 8° stewed pork belly rice [$3.80] - It's a small bowl of pork belly rice. The first bowl was rejected by girlfriend as the rice seems uncooked. The second bowl was better. Service lady said that the rice for this dish used is the pearl rice, hence the hard texture. But we both tried before rejecting, and we were sure that it was uncooked.

八度涼麵 8° cold noodle [$5.80] - Sad to say, it's not nice at all =( The sauce is weird. Very little noodles. And the noodles taste hard. I thought there should be more shaved peanuts too? For the price. Very very not worth.

Not really a place worth a return visit. But maybe we should try out the first outlet in Singapore? Maybe the standard is different?
